I've often pondered what direction Birmingham-based indie rock quartet, Peace, would take their sophomore album in, following the widespread acclaim and fan following garnered by their rapturous debut, 'In Love'. It appears the answer has presented itself in the form of their infectiously hip-shaking and funk-heavy number, 'World Pleasure', which they released as what seems to be a teaser track for album two, earlier today. If this newly mature and, according to lead singer Harrison Koisser, 'refined' sound is anything to go by, it seems Peace are well on their way to confirming the fervent praise they received so early on in their career...
What's both interesting and even a little perplexing about this track is the instrumental maturity and genuine talent Peace exhibit, contrasted with the youthful, frivolous teenage vibe that earned them their reputation as an indie force to be reckoned with in the first place. The verses consist of an unorthodox vocal approach from Koisser, as he drawls, almost speaking, lines such as 'aching, aching everywhere, I don't feel it, you don't care', a sound which massively suggests the band's attempt at a lighthearted, spirited feel. As the track builds into its smooth and sophisticated chorus, the four-piece implement a sultry bassline, shaker and Stone Roses-esque psychedelic guitar riffs, oozing funk and inciting an indisputable urge to groove along with the beat.
Peace's progression from 'In Love' is evident right from the offset of the track, with a bold strings section opening proceedings and leading vivaciously into the layered guitars and cymbal-heavy drum backing. The word 'pleasure' itself within the song's title describes its gloriously laid back and hedonistic vibe perfectly, with each and every component of the song exuding confidence and flair, whilst working harmoniously alongside each other to deliver a track worthy of indie rock's finest's impending release.
